Bees are incredible little creatures, and if introduced correctly to children, can become a fascinating interest for young people. We hope these Kids’ Pages will help pique curiosity and wonder in children while providing them with solid education on helping protect our important pollinators!

Is it a Bunch of Bees or a Colony?
While honey bees are individual insects, a colony of them is known as a superorganism. A superorganism is a group of organized individuals (the bees) that work together to be a single living thing (the colony). Many kinds of ant colonies are superorganisms too! They all have to work together to make the colony successful.
Chore Chart

Superorganisms are interesting in that every single member of a colony has a job to do. Kinda like chores! When everyone does what they’re supposed to do, the colony can thrive.
Worker bee chores are divided into six different jobs, seven if you count the queen. Normally there is only one queen in a colony, so she is very special and she is the mama to all of the bees in a colony; about 60,000! That’s a lot of children!
If you see a bee flying around, quietly watch it. Don’t wave your arms around and don’t try to touch it. If you wait, you may see her doing her chores!
