Is it a Bunch of Bees or a Colony? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

While honey bees are individual insects, a colony of them is known as a superorganism<\/strong>. A superorganism is a group of organized individuals (the bees) that work together to be a single living thing (the colony). Many kinds of ant colonies are superorganisms too! They all have to work together to make the colony successful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Superorganisms are interesting in that every single member of a colony has a job to do. Kinda like chores! When everyone does what they’re supposed to do, the colony can thrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Worker bee chores are divided into six different jobs, seven if you count the queen. Normally there is only one queen in a colony, so she is very special and she is the mama to all of the bees in a colony; about 60,000! That’s a lot of children!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you see a bee flying around, quietly watch it. Don’t wave your arms around and don’t try to touch it. If you wait, you may see her doing her chores!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
